Dr. Bino's Corner, Natural Remedies for Allergies

Does allergy season make you feel beaten up?
The weather is starting to get warm which means the flowers are going to start blooming, which means the dreaded pollen season begins.  This time of year has always caused me fits with allergies.  In the past I had taken over the counter medications, but as of recent have had no success in dealing with my allergies.  So what are some natural remedies Dr. Bino can recommend for anyone dealing with allergies?  Here are a couple of his recommendations:

1. The Queen's Magic (Eden Pond Labs) Dietary Supplement - 100% Natural with no additivess, reduces inflammation.

2. Chewing Honeycomb - There is an old Vermont remedy that suggests eating a honeycomb will alleviate sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes.  Chew the honeycomb for as long as possible, and within 30 minutes allergy symptoms could disappear.  Ideally you start chewing honeycombs a week or two prior to allergy problems starting.  Honeycomb has many other wonderful properties as well.

3. Neti Pots - Have been used for thousands of years to flush the sinuses and keep them clear.  Essentially it's like using a nasal spray to rinse away your allergens.  Takes some getting used to for us Westerners, but has been proven to be highly effective against allergies.

4. Allergey Fighting Foods - A German study, published in the journal Allergy, found that participants who ate foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids were less likely to suffer allergy symptoms than those who didn’t regularly eat these foods. Omega-3s help fight inflammation and can be found in cold-water fish, walnuts and flaxseed oil, as well as grass-fed meat and eggs.

To help keep airways clear when pollen counts are high, add a dash of horseradish, chili peppers or hot mustard to your food — all act as natural, temporary decongestants. It’s also a good idea to avoid foods that you’re slightly allergic to until the air clears. Fighting off allergies can render the body hypersensitive to those foods, causing more severe reactions than usual.

Berry Beta Coconut Smoothie

Been a busy week at RejuvenateYou and I haven't had a chance to post any updates, so I will be catching up next week.  I created this smoothie after having success with my Spinach Smoothie Delight.  I wanted to incorporate strawberries and carrots into something.  I figured if you aren't sure just throw it in a blender and see what happens.  So....voila!

Ingredients:
1 Carrot (peeled and chopped)
1 Banana
1/4 cup Strawberries
1/2 cup Coconut Milk
1 scoop Jay Robb Vanilla Protein Powder
1/4 cup Water
7-8 Ice Cubes
1 tbsp Chia Seed

Put all the ingredients in together and blend it on high until it's smooth.

One thing you noticed is the rich color because of the combination of strawberries and carrots.  Strawberries have wonderful health properties (antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and heavy dose of vitamin c) as do carrots (improved vision, cancer prevention, anti-aging).

Drink this smoothie up and enjoy as it tastes good and it will make you look good!

Spinach Coconut Smoothie Delight

This smoothie was inspired with the help of my good friend Shelley Stuart Butler in Charlotte, NC.  Shelley and I worked together and have known each other for almost 20 years now.  I was talking to her about the smoothies I have made and she told me about a smoothie she makes regularly utilizing spinach as an ingredient.  I hadn't added any raw vegetables to any of my smoothies.  I always assumed it wouldn't work well with the fruits I was using....boy was I wrong!!!  I followed her lead and came up with my "Spinach Coconut Smoothie Delight".

Ingredients:
4 oz. of Spinach (Handful will suffice)
1 Banana
1/4 cup Blueberries
1/2 cup Coconut Milk
1 scoop Jay Robb Protein Powder (I used the Strawberry for this one, any flavor you like)
1/4 cup Water
7-8 Ice Cubes
1 tbsp Chia Seed

Put all the ingredients in together and blend it on high until it's smooth.

We use the Vitamix Blender and it blends everything very smooth.  I used to use Garden of Life Raw Protein in my smoothies, and still will in some cases.  But adding spinach to this smoothie blows it out of the water.  Without a doubt one of the best smoothies I have ever made and tasted.  In the future I might add some carrots to this smoothie to see how it goes.  I drank this after the gym and it was incredibly refreshing.  Could have this everyday in the morning or as a post-workout drink.

I am going to call it either a "Spinach Coconut Smoothie Delight" or "The Shelley" in honor of my friend.  Thank you for the inspiration Shelley!
